Types of Microphone

We find several types of microphones in marketplaces. There are several types of microphones, including:

Dynamic microphones

These are rugged and can handle high sound pressure levels, making them well-suited for live performances and speech. They are also relatively inexpensive.

Condenser microphones

These are more sensitive and accurate than dynamic microphones and are commonly used in recording studios and for broadcasting. They require external power, often provided by a battery or phantom power source.

USB microphones

These are microphones that connect to a computer via USB, allowing for easy recording and live streaming. They are popular with podcasters and streamers.

Ribbon microphones

These are high-end microphones that use a thin ribbon of metal suspended between two magnets to create an electrical current. They are known for their smooth and natural sound.

Lavalier/lapel microphone

These are small microphones that can be attached to clothing, often used for interviews and video conferencing.

Shotgun microphone

These are long, narrow microphones that are often mounted on a boom or a camera and are used in film, television, and video production.

Boundary microphones

These are also known as PZM (Pressure Zone Microphones) and are designed to be placed on a flat surface such as a table or floor, they are often used in conference rooms and other similar settings.

How Does the Microphone Work?

A microphone works by converting sound waves into an electrical current. When sound waves hit the diaphragm of a microphone, they cause it to vibrate. This movement generates an electrical current, which can then be amplified and recorded.

The most common type of microphone is the dynamic microphone, which uses a diaphragm and a coil of wire to convert sound into electrical energy. The diaphragm is a thin piece of material, usually made of plastic or metal that vibrates when sound waves hit it. The coil is located close to a magnet and when the diaphragm vibrates, it moves the coil which generates an electrical current.

A condenser microphone, on the other hand, uses a thin, metallic diaphragm positioned close to a fixed metal plate. When sound waves hit the diaphragm, it moves slightly, changing the distance between the diaphragm and the plate. This change in distance modifies the capacitance between the two, which generates an electrical current.

In general, the diaphragm of the microphone will move back and forth with the sound waves, which causes changes in the electrical current. The electrical current can then be amplified, recorded, or transmitted to a speaker to produce sound.

Why I need Microphone?

A microphone can be used for a variety of purposes, depending on the specific application. Some common uses of a microphone include:

Recording: Microphones can be used to capture audio for music and podcast recording, film and video production, and other types of audio recording.

Amplification: A microphone can be used to amplify a speaker’s voice in a live setting, such as a concert or conference.

Teleconferencing: A microphone is often used in conjunction with a webcam to allow for clear communication during video conferences or online meetings.

Voice recognition: Some devices such as smartphones, laptops, and smart speakers use microphones to enable voice commands and dictation.

Gaming: Some games use the microphone as an input device for voice chat, voice commands, or in-game voice acting.

Surveillance: Microphones can be used for security and surveillance purposes, such as recording audio in a specific location.

Buying Guide for Microphone

When purchasing a microphone, there are a few important factors to consider:

Type of microphone: There are several types of microphones available, including dynamic, condenser, USB, and lavalier. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses and is best suited for different applications.

Directionality: Some microphones are omnidirectional, meaning they pick up sound from all directions, while others are uni-directional and only pick up sound from one direction. Directionality is important to consider based on your intended use.

Connectivity: Some microphones connect to a device via USB, while others require an audio interface or XLR cable. Make sure the microphone you choose is compatible with your device.

Quality: Look for a microphone with a high signal-to-noise ratio, low distortion, and good sensitivity.

Brand: Research different brands to find a reputable one, with a good history of providing good quality microphones.

Price: Microphones can range in price from a few dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the type and features. Determine a budget and stick to it while keeping in mind that a higher price doesn’t always mean better quality.

Reviews: Look for customer reviews to get a sense of the microphone’s real-world performance and reliability.

Additional features: Some microphones come with built-in features like noise reduction or built-in pre-amp that may be useful depending on your intended use.

By considering these factors, you can find a microphone that is well-suited for your needs and budget.
